Dutch flag carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced the appointment of Mathieu Essenberg as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective August 1. The appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the airline as it continues to focus on operational efficiency, passenger experience, and long-term growth in an increasingly competitive aviation industry.
Essenberg, a seasoned KLM executive with more than two decades of experience at the airline, officially steps into the role after serving as interim COO following the departure of former COO and Managing Director Maarten Stienen in April. His promotion reflects KLM’s strategy of nurturing leadership talent from within the organization while ensuring continuity across its operational divisions.
A Veteran Leader with Deep KLM Experience
Mathieu Essenberg’s career at KLM spans over 20 years, having joined the airline in 2002. Throughout his tenure, he has built extensive expertise across several critical areas of the business, making him one of the company’s most experienced aviation leaders.
His leadership journey has included senior management positions in:
- Flight operations
- Hub operations
- Engineering and Maintenance
- KLM Cityhopper
- Operational management
In addition to his executive responsibilities, Essenberg has firsthand flying experience as a KLM pilot, providing him with a unique operational perspective that few airline executives possess. His combination of technical knowledge, frontline aviation experience, and executive leadership is expected to support KLM as it navigates evolving industry challenges.
Before taking on the interim COO role, Essenberg served as Executive Vice President of Engineering and Maintenance, where he oversaw one of the airline’s most critical operational functions responsible for aircraft safety, reliability, and fleet performance.
Joins KLM’s Board of Directors
With his appointment as Chief Operating Officer, Essenberg also becomes a member of KLM’s Board of Directors.
He joins an executive leadership team comprising:
- Marjan Rintel, President and Chief Executive Officer
- Bas Brouns, Chief Financial Officer
- Miriam Kartman, Chief People Officer
The expanded board reflects KLM’s commitment to strengthening leadership as the airline continues investing in operational resilience, sustainability initiatives, and customer service improvements.
CEO Marjan Rintel Praises Internal Leadership Appointment
KLM President and CEO Marjan Rintel welcomed Essenberg’s appointment, emphasizing the value of promoting experienced leaders from within the organization.
According to Rintel, Essenberg’s extensive understanding of KLM’s operations, combined with his leadership experience across multiple business units, made him the ideal choice for the position. She highlighted his proven ability to lead diverse teams and his strong track record of delivering results throughout his career with the airline.
His appointment also reinforces KLM’s confidence in developing internal leadership talent rather than seeking external executives for one of the company’s most important operational roles.
Focus on Safety, Reliability and Passenger Experience
Responding to his appointment, Essenberg expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead KLM’s operational activities at a pivotal time for the airline.
He stated that he looks forward to working alongside KLM employees to address the industry’s ongoing challenges while maintaining the airline’s commitment to its highest priorities.
According to Essenberg, safety, operational reliability, and delivering an excellent passenger experience will remain at the heart of KLM’s operational strategy under his leadership.
These priorities are particularly significant as airlines worldwide continue adapting to increasing passenger demand, evolving regulatory requirements, workforce challenges, and ongoing investments in fleet modernization and sustainable aviation.
Strengthening KLM’s Future Operations
The appointment comes as airlines across Europe continue prioritizing operational stability after several years of industry disruption. With extensive experience spanning engineering, maintenance, flight operations, and airline management, Essenberg is expected to play a central role in ensuring KLM maintains reliable services while supporting the carrier’s long-term strategic objectives.
His deep institutional knowledge, combined with practical aviation experience, positions him to oversee the airline’s day-to-day operations while helping KLM enhance efficiency, maintain high safety standards, and deliver consistent service quality for millions of passengers.
As he officially assumes the role on August 1, Essenberg’s leadership is expected to support KLM’s continued efforts to strengthen operational performance and reinforce its position as one of Europe’s leading full-service airlines.
