PierSight Unveils ‘Vidura’: India’s New Forest-Penetrating Radar System for Advanced Defence Surveillance

Ahmedabad Space Startup Expands Beyond Maritime Monitoring with AI-Powered SAR Technology Designed to See Through Dense Forests, Clouds, and Darkness

India’s growing space-tech ecosystem has taken another significant leap forward as Ahmedabad-based startup PierSight announced the launch of trial operations for Vidura, an advanced airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system designed to detect hidden activity beneath dense forest cover.

The new surveillance payload represents a major advancement in tactical reconnaissance capabilities, enabling defence forces to identify concealed movement, structures, and potential threats in environments where traditional optical systems often fail. By leveraging sophisticated radar imaging technology, Vidura can operate effectively through thick foliage, cloud cover, smoke, and complete darkness, providing uninterrupted situational awareness regardless of weather or visibility conditions.

A New Era of Forest Surveillance

Modern military and security operations frequently encounter challenges in heavily forested regions, where dense vegetation can conceal movements, camps, equipment, or infrastructure. Conventional cameras and optical sensors depend on clear visibility and daylight conditions, making surveillance difficult during adverse weather or nighttime operations.

Vidura addresses these limitations by using Synthetic Aperture Radar technology, which generates high-resolution images by transmitting radar signals capable of penetrating environmental obstacles. This allows defence operators to gather critical intelligence even in areas where visual monitoring is nearly impossible.

PierSight has opened immediate trial access for defence organizations interested in evaluating the system’s capabilities in real-world operational scenarios.

Built for Tactical Intelligence Missions

According to the company, Vidura is designed to support a wide range of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. One of its standout capabilities is enabling stand-off surveillance operations, allowing security agencies and military units to monitor areas of interest from safe distances while remaining within friendly airspace.

Such capabilities are becoming increasingly important as defence forces worldwide seek technologies that reduce operational risk while improving intelligence-gathering effectiveness.

The system’s ability to function continuously across varying environmental conditions makes it particularly valuable for border security, counterinsurgency operations, disaster assessment, and strategic reconnaissance missions.

From Oceans to Forests: The Evolution of PierSight’s SAR Technology

Vidura is the second major SAR-based platform developed by PierSight and builds upon the technological foundation created for the company’s ambitious maritime surveillance initiative, Varuna.

Varuna is a planned constellation of 32 satellites that combines Synthetic Aperture Radar and Automatic Identification System (AIS) technologies to monitor global maritime activity. While Varuna focuses on tracking vessels and maritime operations, Vidura adapts the same core radar expertise for land-based tactical applications.

Speaking about the development, PierSight Founder and CEO Gaurav Seth highlighted how the company leveraged its existing engineering knowledge and intellectual property to create a solution for an entirely different operational environment.

According to Seth, the experience gained while building Varuna allowed the company to rapidly redesign and optimize its SAR technology for forest surveillance missions, demonstrating the versatility of the underlying platform.

Multi-Band Technology for Greater Flexibility

A key feature of Vidura is its support for multiple radar frequency bands, including P-band, L-band, and X-band configurations. This flexibility allows operators to select the most appropriate configuration depending on mission requirements, terrain conditions, and surveillance objectives.

The multi-band architecture enables broader area coverage while maintaining the ability to detect targets hidden beneath vegetation. Such adaptability gives defence users greater operational flexibility across diverse environments.

Designed for Any Drone Platform

Another major advantage of the new system is its drone-agnostic design. Unlike payloads tied to a specific aircraft manufacturer, Vidura can be integrated across multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms.

This open architecture approach allows defence organizations to deploy the radar system on existing drone fleets without requiring significant infrastructure changes or dependence on a single vendor ecosystem.

PierSight is actively pursuing collaborations with UAV manufacturers to integrate Vidura into next-generation drone platforms and deliver complete radar-enabled surveillance solutions to customers.

Early Industry Interest and Field Trials Underway

The company revealed that Vidura has already attracted initial commercial interest, securing early contracts from several organizations. Multiple field demonstrations and operational trials are scheduled throughout 2026 to further validate the system’s capabilities across different deployment scenarios.

Through these trials, PierSight aims to gather performance data, refine operational integration, and accelerate adoption among defence and security agencies.

The radar payload is currently being offered through a limited-access early launch program, giving selected defence operators the opportunity to evaluate the technology before broader market availability.

Strengthening India’s Indigenous Defence Technology Ecosystem

Founded by former ISRO scientist Gaurav Seth, PierSight has rapidly emerged as one of India’s promising space and radar technology startups. The company specializes in application-specific SAR solutions serving maritime security, defence intelligence, and related strategic sectors.

The introduction of Vidura reflects a broader trend within India’s defence technology landscape, where homegrown startups are increasingly developing advanced surveillance and intelligence systems that reduce dependence on foreign technologies.

As security challenges evolve and demand for all-weather reconnaissance solutions continues to grow, Vidura could position PierSight as an important contributor to India’s next generation of defence and surveillance capabilities.

With field trials now underway and industry partnerships taking shape, the startup’s latest innovation may soon become a critical asset for military and security operations operating in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
