Artificial intelligence (AI) is the new buzzword making rounds in almost every sphere of life. Simply put, it is the ability of a computer or a robot controlled by a computer to do tasks that are usually done by humans!
Based on pattern recognition, is the ability to reason, discover meaning, generalize, or learn from experience.
AI- the term coined by John Mcarthy in 1956 is advancing rapidly. Recent years have seen dramatic
breakthroughs in image and speech recognition, autonomous robotics, language tasks, and game playing. The coming decades will likely see substantial progress. This promises excellent benefits: new scientific discoveries, cheaper and better goods, and services, medical advances. AI can be used to tackle a range of global challenges, including combating climate change, pandemic response, and food security.
But There have been a few concerning voices that make us rethink the expansion of artificial intelligence in every walk of life. There are a few near-term concerns with AI like privacy, bias, inequality, safety and security. Various institutions of global research have identified emerging threats and trends in global cybersecurity, and have explored challenges on the intersection of AI, digitization and nuclear weapons systems.
The late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking famously postulated that if AI itself begins designing better AI than human programmers, the result could be “machines whose intelligence exceeds ours by more than ours exceeds that of snails.” Elon Musk believes and has for years warned that AGI is humanity’s biggest existential threat. Efforts to bring it about, he has said, are like “summoning the demon.”
Though the future looks uncertain vis a vis AI, it is definitely going to be the future!
So, even if the support & voice are equally divided, artificial intelligence is sure going to be a thing of tomorrow as AI’s impact is everywhere!
On one hand, Artificial intelligence could enable brutal global dictatorship with unprecedented inequality, surveillance, suffering and maybe even human extinction. But if we steer carefully, we could end up in a fantastic future where everybody’s better off—the poor are richer, the rich are richer, everybody’s healthy and free to live out their dreams.”
