Becoming Before Building: The Truth About the Entrepreneurial Journey

journey

Laughter and music fill the air; glasses clink as we raise a toast and the cheer grows louder as  the team celebrates another successful year in business.

But then, as the noise of celebration slowly fades into the quietness of the night and I settle  into my chair to sit with myself, the familiar voice of self-doubt whispers at first, and then  grows louder as it asks me the same question yet again:

“Yes, you got through this year… but what if this is it? What if you don’t get through the next  one? What if you fail this time?”

I sit there in silence, filled with fear, feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. The feelings that  never seem to leave, no matter how far I get.

I am an entrepreneur, and I have run my business for 10 years now. What once started out as  a nameless passion project from my room in my parents’ home has a name today — LingoNest, a company catering to the language and communication learning needs of  hundreds of individuals across the globe.

And here I am, somewhere between having accomplished far more than I had ever imagined,  and yet far less than I now dream of achieving.

And in this space lies my biggest lesson in entrepreneurship:

As an entrepreneur, the journey forward and upward cannot be made without making  the journey inward.

The entrepreneurial journey is characterised by uncertainty. The challenges and obstacles that  meet you along the way may appear external but more often than not, they are reflections of  what remains unresolved within.

For most entrepreneurs, the biggest obstacles are not their skills or abilities, but their  relationship with themselves – their ability to trust their own capabilities and the beliefs they hold.

It is the quiet, persistent narrative in our own minds that holds us back. And so, to move  forward, we must confront the parts of ourselves that make us uncomfortable – the ones we  have buried deep, hoping they would eventually disappear.

To every entrepreneur who feels stuck, lost, or exhausted by the continued effort to push  forward without really moving ahead – this might be a good time to pause and revisit the  story you have been carrying.

Because at some point, the story you carry… begins to carry you.

To move forward from here what you need is courage, the courage to see the truth hidden  behind these stories that have been holding you back.

We are all limited by the beliefs we hold about ourselves, others, and the world – the ones we  once accepted as truth, never realising how they became invisible chains pulling us back each  time we try to move forward.

A belief, in its simplest sense, is what the mind accepts to be real or true. It is powerful  because it eventually becomes the lens through which we see the world. Depending on what  we believe, these beliefs can either limit us or propel us forward.

Self-limiting beliefs, then, are the negative or self-critical beliefs we hold about ourselves.  They are often rooted in past experiences—especially in childhood, in comments made by  people whose opinions matter to us, and in the values and beliefs we absorb from our  environment. Over time, these beliefs not only weaken our sense of self-worth but also  hold us back from fully stepping into opportunities, experiences, and growth.

We hold on to these narratives because, in some way, we believe they are protecting us— keeping us safe and preventing us from being hurt again. After all, in the moment, it feels  easier to convince yourself that you don’t want something than to go after it and risk failing.  But such is life that the very beliefs that once protected us and helped us survive, when  left unchecked, begin to limit us.

The challenge however is that limiting beliefs are not loud or obvious. They are often subtle,  deeply ingrained, and disguised as logic or practicality.

In business, they may sound like-

“I’m not ready yet.”

“I need more experience.”

“I don’t want to lose money.”

“What if I put in all the effort and even then it doesn’t work out? What will happen then?”  “What if I am not qualified enough to take this decision?”

And because they sound reasonable, we rarely question them. We simply live by them.

In my own journey, these beliefs have slowed me down. They showed up in hesitation before  taking bold decisions. In moments where I underplayed my worth. In times when I chose  safety over growth, not because it was the right decision, but because it felt more  comfortable.

It was only when I began to look inward that I realised—growth in entrepreneurship is not  just about doing more; it is about becoming more. And becoming more requires both  unlearning and learning—letting go of what no longer serves us, and choosing what  aligns with who we are becoming.

So how do you begin to move beyond limiting beliefs?

Not by waiting for them to disappear, but by learning how to work with them.

Rewriting the narrative begins with awareness. With the willingness to recognise that  these beliefs exist in all of us and that we all carry them.

Then comes reflection – paying attention to the thoughts that repeatedly show up. Noticing  the patterns. The hesitation. The quiet voice in your head that surfaces just before you take a  chance on yourself.

Sometimes, the answers don’t lie in your thoughts alone, but in your behaviour too. The  opportunities you avoid. The risks you don’t take. The decisions you delay. All of them  quietly point towards the beliefs you hold.

Once you begin to see them, you begin to understand their impact. You start to notice where  they are holding you back—where you are saying no when you should be saying yes, not  because you lack capability, but because you doubt it.

And then comes the most important shift—questioning these beliefs. Because not every  thought you have is true. In order to challenge these beliefs, you need to gather evidence— moments from your own life where these beliefs did not hold true. Moments where you were  capable, where you showed up, where you did more than you thought you could.

And slowly, as you collect this evidence, the belief begins to lose its power over you.

In its place, you can begin to choose a new belief — one that supports you, one that moves  you forward, one that aligns with the life and business you are trying to build.

And with time, with awareness and intention, you begin to notice something powerful — how  many of your decisions, big and small, were once being made by beliefs you never  questioned. And just how much becomes possible when you finally do.

The truth is we are never at the full expansion of ourselves—we are always in the  process of becoming. And in that journey, there is always room for growth.

All we need to do… is make sure we don’t get in our own way.
